City Description

Gero, located in Gifu Prefecture in Japan, is one of the most well-known places on the map of Japanese hot springs. It is primarily famous for its onsen and has enjoyed a reputation as one of the top three onsen in Japan since the Edo period, alongside Kusatsu and Arima. A visit to Gero is a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in traditional Japanese relaxation and take advantage of its healing properties. Gero Onsengai is the main street of the onsen, lined with traditional ryokan, shops offering local products, and restaurants serving regional specialties such as Hida beef sushi. A unique element of the landscape is the Gero Bridge, from which you can see the Hida River. In the town, it is worth visiting the Gero Onsen Gassho Village, which is a replica of a traditional village with houses characterized by thatched roofs typical of the Shirakawa-go region. In summer, festivals such as the Gero Onsen Matsuri are held here, featuring performances of traditional dances and fireworks. In winter, the town transforms into an oasis of snowy scenery, which can be admired from many viewpoints. It is also worth taking a trip to the nearby Hida-Osaka Falls mountain resort to enjoy some of the most beautiful waterfalls in the region and discover hiking trails surrounding the city. An added value is the hospitality of the local community, which makes everyone feel welcome here and easily immerses themselves in the local culture.
