Shimonoseki

Shimonoseki is a city located at the southern tip of Honshu Island in Yamaguchi Prefecture, primarily known for its strategically important port that connects Honshu with Kyushu via the Kanmon Strait. The history of Shimonoseki is rich and includes, among other things, the peace treaty ending the First Sino-Japanese War in 1895, known as the Treaty of Shimonoseki. The city is also known for its fishing industry, especially for the catch of fugu, or pufferfish, which is considered a delicacy but requires special preparation due to its toxin content. One of the most distinctive landmarks is the Kanmon Bridge, which connects Shimonoseki with the city of Kitakyushu on Kyushu Island.
